Collection on symbols of remembrance, 1997
Contains items collected by Brigham Young University folklore students as examples of material lore symbolizing remembrance. Items were collected by students in folklore classes at Brigham Young University and Utah State University from 1997. Most of the items are typewritten, but a few of the older items are handwritten. Many of the items contain a description of how, when, and where they were collected as well as explanations of social and cultural contexts.

Report by Brigham Young University folklore student Janet Lelani Messer, who collected information from her roommate, Kristi Melnichuk. Wooden dolls were purchased to commemorate children who were left on a mountaintop because their parents could not afford them.
Monkey on a tree / Cris Richardson, 1997 June 24
Report by Brigham Young University folklore student Cris Richardson, who collected information from his grandfather, Henry Yamamoto. As a young man, Henry began carving monkeys inside peach pits, which have become family keepsakes.
Red ruby ring / Carol Madsen, 1997 June 6
Report by Brigham Young University folklore student Carol Madsen, who collected information from her father, Dan Madesen. Dan's father once came home from working at the hospital with an heirloom ring missing. Years later, a patient asked to speak with Dan, who ended up working at the same hospital, and returned the ring, now taken as a reminder of repentance and reconciliation.
